Embodiment Construction

[0040] Embodiments of the present invention provide a circuit for (simulation or realization of) a "synthetic" physical unclonable function in a computer device configured to: - learn from at least one hardware sensor (and / or actuator) Receiving data, (possibly several) said sensors (associated with actuators) can be accessed eg in said computer device; - determining deviations in the data; - determining a multivariate distribution of deviations.

[0041] In an embodiment, the circuit is further configured to determine an identifier from said multivariate distribution. Such identifiers may be used for different purposes (for example, for secret key generation, or to authenticate or identify the device (if the identifiers can be further compared)).

[0042] In an embodiment, the deviation includes systematic error.

[0043] The term "bias" includes the aggregate of "systematic" errors and "random" errors. Bias can be classified into systematic error and random error. Embodim...

Abstract

There is disclosed a circuit for a Synthetic Physically Unclonable Function, acronym SPUF, in a computer device, wherein the circuit is configured to receive data from a plurality of hardware sensorsand / or actuators accessible in said computer device; to determine deviations in said data; to determine a multivariate distribution of said deviations and to determine an identifier from said multivariate distribution. In described developments, deviations comprise random errors, statistical moments in data originating from sensors and / or actuators amongst accessible ones in the computer device can be selected, and entropy can be maximized. Computer program product embodiments are described.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to the field of digital data processing, and more particularly to methods and systems for processing physically unclonable functions. Background technique [0002] Physically Unclonable Functions (referred to by the abbreviation PUF or plural PUFs) can be used in various contexts (e.g. authentication of a chip or a commodity to which the chip is attached, generation of encryption keys or seeds of a PRNG). [0003] A PUF is a physical entity that is embodied in a physical structure and is the same in every physical instance of the structure. [0004] When provided with an input or a challenge, a PUF generates a specific output or response. The value of the particular output is specific to each instance of the physical entity embodied within the device. PUFs exploit variations in conditions during the fabrication of many of the same devices. In a way, a PUF can be thought of as an analog of a device's fingerprin...
