Background technique [0001] Paints, coatings, sealants, adhesives and related products are often produced as uncured and / or fluid mixtures that are sealed and stored for a period of time before use. A number of amine-based compounds have been used as neutralizing agents in such coating formulations. Neutralizers are present in many waterborne paints in order to achieve an optimum pH between 8 and 10, usually around 8.5 to 9.3. Ammonia and various low molecular weight aliphatic amines have been used, but these materials can impart an undesirable and unpleasant odor to the paint and may contribute volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to the overall formulation.
