PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a matte type aqueous coating composition capable of achieving both of stain resistance and weather resistance for long time and excellent in backing followability, and a method for forming a coated film using the same. SOLUTION: There are provided a stain resistant matte aqueous coating composition containing an aqueous resin (A), a pigment content (B) and a glycol ether compound (C), where glass transition temperature of the aqueous resin (A) is 10 DEG C or more, copolymerization percentage of the aromatic vinyl compound is 40 mass% or less, the pigment content (B) contains a coloring pigment (b1), a flaky loading pigment (b2) and a loading pigment (b3) other than (b2), (b1) is 5 pts.mass or more, (b2) is 50 pts.mass or more, (b3) is 20 pts.mass or more based on 100 pts.mass of the solid content of the aqueous resin (A), (C) is in a range of 5 to 25 pts.mass, and a pigment body concentration is 35% or more.
