Problems solved by technology

The "virtual cone" approach requires two passes of the MLC per recliner angle, and the general MLC blade shape designed for other purposes may result in compromising the shape of the delivered radiation and may raise user concerns that it may fail to produce radiation Robust implementation of delivery

Embodiment Construction

[0054] Embodiments of the present disclosure provide specially designed multi-leaf collimators (MLCs) and solutions for controlling the MLCs, which can be used to provide radiosurgery and stereotaxic radiosurgery. One exemplary approach is to configure or modify the MLC vane tips so that when the MLC vanes are closed they form a small cone and / or favor a more conical profile than conventional MLCs with "virtual cones". Another exemplary approach is to provide one or more through holes in one or more MLC vanes. The solution provided by the present disclosure enables the delivery of small SRS cone-beam profiles directly from the MLC, while fully preserving the general purpose or functionality of the MLC. The multi-leaf collimator of embodiments may have other medical and non-medical applications. Multi-leaf collimators can be used to shape radiation beams for many purposes, including non-medical purposes.

Abstract

An apparatus includes a first multileaf collimator comprising a plurality of pairs of beam-blocking leaves 200 each comprising an end portion. The end portions of beam-blocking leaves of two adjacent pairs are configured to collectively form an aperture 210 when the two adjacent pairs of beam-blocking leaves are closed. The aperture may be sized and shaped to allow a radiation beam to pass through for radiosurgery.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure generally relates to radiation devices and methods. In particular, various embodiments of multileaf collimators (MLCs) that enable and enhance radiosurgery and stereotactic radiosurgery are described. Background technique [0002] Radiosurgery is a highly precise, intensive form of radiation therapy. Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is generally referred to as the application of high doses of radiation in a single fraction based on specially defined treatment coordinates. Stereotactic radiation therapy is similar to SRS, with the exception that usually two or more fractions are used for patient treatment. It is worth noting that the term "stereotaxic" may imply the use of a stereotaxic coordinate system for patient positioning for treatment. Over time, image-guided procedures that do not rely on stereotaxic coordinates, as well as other forms of patient and tumor localization, have been relegated to the category of stereotaxic ...
