Problems solved by technology

First, the operation of methods that require phosgene as a reactant is a disadvantage due to obvious safety concerns
Second, the method that requires the use of large amounts of organic solvents to operate is a disadvantage since costly precautions must be taken to prevent any adverse environmental effects
Third, the interface approach requires a relatively large investment in equipment and capital
However, due to its high Fris content, low Fris polycarbonate prepared by the melt process usually has rather low ductility

[0022] There are at least two different methods for preparing a composition containing polycarbonate, wherein the Fres content of the composition is generally above the interfacial polycarbonate, but below 360 ppm. The simplest method is just to mix the appropriate amount of molten polycarbonate into the interfacial polycarbonate. This can be achieved by many methods, such as adding only the appropriate proportions of high-Friesian melt polycarbonate and interface polycarbonate to the extruder. The samples (2) and (3) in Example 4 were prepared by this technique. Alternatively, the low-Friesian melt polycarbonate can also be prepared as in Example 2, and any other required ingredients that do not contain unacceptable Friesian ratios can be added. The method for preparing molten polycarbonate having a Fres content of less than 360 ppm is generally described below.

Abstract

The present invention provides a composition comprising polycarbonate wherein the polycarbonate has a very low Fries content (e.g., above 5 ppm and below 360 ppm). The present invention also provides a polycarbonate having a very low Fries content which is made by the melt process. This polycarbonate has high ductility and high impact strength. The invention also provides a method for making these compositions. Another aspect of the invention is an optical disk comprising polycarbonate having a very low Fries content which is made by the melt process. Such optical disks resist breakage due to bending.

Description

Background of the invention [0001] The present invention relates to a composition containing polycarbonate, wherein the polycarbonate has a low content of special branching substances. These branched substances are represented by the following general formula (I), and are generally referred to as "Fries" ("Fries") branched substances (hereinafter referred to as "Fries"). More specifically, the present invention relates to a low-Fries polycarbonate prepared by a melt synthesis method. The present invention further relates to an optical disc containing the low-Friesian polycarbonate, and an injection molding method using the polycarbonate. [0002] Conventional industrial equipment synthesizes polycarbonate by mixing an aqueous solution of a dihydroxy compound (such as bisphenol A) and an organic solvent (such as methylene chloride) containing a carbonyl halide (such as phosgene). Once the immiscible organic phase and the water phase are mixed, the dihydroxy compound and carbonyl ha...
