Embodiment 1

[0057] Preparation of growth medium is described below. 79° Brix molasses (1000 grams) from TCT, Gold Coast was diluted to 1 L with distilled water to give a 32° Brix solution. Then, add 4.12 grams of KCl, followed by 4.12 grams of MgSO 4 .7H 2 O, below is 44.4 grams of NH 4 HPO 4 , and stir the resulting mixture evenly. Sufficient water was added to this mixture to make a final volume of 2 L, thus making 32° Brix molasses. The sugar content of the mixture was measured by using a Brix refractometer (Cole-Palmer Instrument Co., RH13-32ATC), and the final pH was adjusted to 5.0 with HCl or NaOH. The solution was then autoclaved at 105°C for 15 minutes.

[0058] The stock solution of sodium selenate was prepared as follows. To 300 mL of distilled water was added 9.0 g of sodium selenate at normal temperature, and the resulting mixture was kept at normal temperature for 1 hour, and then filtered through a cellulose acetate membrane [Corning Scientific Co].

Embodiment 2

[0064] The method described in Example 1 was repeated, and the result was that the final concentration of selenium in the yeast mass was 1849ppm. Example 3

Embodiment 3

[0065] Yeast growth nutrients were prepared as follows. 25° Brix molasses (670 g) from TCT, Gold Coast was diluted with 1 L of distilled water, then, 2.72 g of KCl was added, followed by 2.72 g of MgSO 4 .7H 2 O, below is 29.28 grams of NH 4 HPO 4 , and then a sufficient amount of water was added to the mixture to make a final volume of 2 L, and the resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature until homogeneous. The sugar content of the mixture was measured by using a Brix refractometer (Cole-Palmer Instrument Co., RH13-32ATC), and the final pH was adjusted to 5.0. The solution was then autoclaved at 105°C for 15 minutes.

[0066] A stock solution (3%) of sodium selenate was prepared as follows. To 300 mL of distilled water was added 9.0 g of sodium selenate at normal temperature, and the resulting mixture was stirred at normal temperature for 1 hour. The resulting selenium solution was filtered through a cellulose acetate membrane [Corning Scientific Co].

Abstract

The present invention solves the need for non-toxic forms of selenium which is an essential part of the human diet. This invention provides novel dried-yeast products containing selenium as well as a method of producing the dried yeast products. The method uses selenium having high biological activity but low toxicity. The invention also provides nutritional supplements containing the novel selenium-containing dried yeast products and methods of administering these products and supplements to improve human health.

Description

Background of the invention [0001] This application is a continuation-in-part of US Patent Application Serial No. 08 / 719,572 filed September 25, 1996, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. [0002] 1. The field of the invention [0003] The present invention relates to the field of human food additives, and more particularly the invention relates to improved additives containing organic selenium complexes derived from yeast. [0004] 2. Background [0005] Physiological assimilation of heavy metals in appropriate amounts is essential for human health. Failure to ingest and absorb the required amount of this metal can lead to dysfunction of the body's metabolic processes and various diseases. [0006] Many traditional nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals, can be taken in large amounts without negative health effects, for which the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has established recommended daily amounts. However, for certain nutrients,...
