Process for extraction and purification of lutein, zeaxanthin and rare carotenoids from marigold flowers and plants

A process for simultaneously extracting, saponifying, and isolating lutein and zeaxanthin, and a mixture of several rare carotenoids in high purity from plants without the use of harmful organic solvents. Lutein crystals containing 5% zeaxanthin were obtained from the dried petals of Marigold flowers Tagete erecla while zeaxanthin was isolated and purified from the berries of Lycium Chinese Mill (LCM berries). Similarly, this process has been employed to isolate and purify a mixture of lutein, beta-carotene, neoxanthin, violaxanthin, and lutein epoxide from green plants, preferably, kale, collard green, and spinach. These plants, to a lesser extent, also serve as a source of several rare carotenoids such as alpha-cryptoxanthin (Marigolds) and beta-cryptoxanthin (LCM berries). The purified carotenoids isolated by this process are free from impurities and serve as a safe source of nutritional supplement for human consumption as well as providing a suitable and effective color additive for human foods.

Method and apparatus for producing fully cooked extrudates with significantly reduced specific mechanical energy inputs

Improved extruders and methods for the extrusion cooking of comestible products such as human foods or animal feeds are provided wherein the products may be produced with very low specific mechanical energy (SME) inputs as compared with conventional processing. The methods preferably involve introduction of very high levels of steam into the extruder barrel (12) during processing, which concomitantly reduces necessary SME inputs required to achieve desired cook and expansion levels in the products. In accordance with the invention, fully-cooked pet foods can be fabricated with SME inputs of up to about 18 kWhr / T, whereas aquatic feeds can be fabricated with SME inputs of up to about 16 kWhr / T. In preferred forms, the extruder (10) includes specially configured, intermeshed extrusion screws (18, 20) and a plurality of obliquely oriented steam inlets (48, 50), and an upstream, dual-shaft preconditioner (90) is used having individual variable frequency drives (98, 100) which allow infinite variablility in the speed and rotational direction of the preconditioner shafts (94, 96).

Fungi cultivation on alcohol fermentation stillage for useful products and energy savings

A method of processing stillage from fermentation derived alcohol is disclosed, including dry-grind ethanol production from corn, by fermentation with filamentous fungi. This produces high-value fungal biomass that can be recovered by screening, is easily dewatered and used as an animal feed, human food or as a source of nutraceuticals. The methodology uses an airlift reactor to enhance the morphology of the fungi for easy harvesting and separation of water for recycling and reuse and to recover added enzymes and mineral acid with the water. The process also separates oil from the stillage. The fungal processing removes organic substances from the water that are otherwise inhibitory to the reuse prospects for the water, i.e. suspended and dissolved organic matter, including glycerol, lactic and acetic acids. The process also separates oil from the stillage by enmeshing the oil in the fungal biomass and can produce more oil through cultivation of oleaginous fungi. This approach generates revenue from low value thin stillage, while substantially reducing stillage processing costs, mainly by averting the need for evaporation of the thin stillage.

Multiple strains and species of Campylobacter were found to share a common glycan moitie which is present in a plurality of surface-exposed glycoproteins. This glycan has the formula: GalNAc-a1,4-GalNAc-a1,4-[Glc-β1,3]GalNAc-a1,4-GalNAc-a1,4-GalNAc-a1,3-Bac, wherein Bac is 2,4-diacetamido-2,4,6-trideoxy-D-glucopyranose. This glycan and immunologically active fragments of it have use as vaccines against campylobacter infection in humans and animals. As well, antibodies which specifically bind these compounds may be provided. Such antibodies and vaccines may be used to prevent or neutralize campylobacter infections in livestock thereby preventing this pathogen from entering the human food chain. The glycan may be linked to one or more amino acids to form a glycopeptide. As well, a method for determining the glycan structure of an intact glycoprotein consists of subjecting a sample to high resolution magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (HR-MAS-NMR) spectroscopy.

Compositions and methods for mycotoxin decontamination, nucleotide, protein and vitamin enrichment and palatability enhancement of food and animal feed using micronized yeast biomass

A method for upgrading human food and animal feed, rendering harmless the contaminating mycotoxins, increasing protein and nucleotide content, providing immuno-modulation, enhancing flavor and palatability is proposed. The method comprises a food functional additive / supplement and feed additive based on yeast biomass processed to enhance the bioavailability and biological activity of its components using dry micron milling with optional agglomeration. The resulting product contains all biologically active components originally present in intact live yeast. Compared to existing practice, the new process is much faster, cheaper, less hardware demanding, less prone to microbial contamination, provides intact biopolymers and results in insoluble product fraction with high surface area. Human food and animal feed containing such additive improves weight gains, feed efficiency, resilience to mycotoxin contamination, improves immunological status, controls intestinal Salmonella and other bacteria and decreases mortality, especially at the young age, replacing antibiotics and growth promoters.
