Embodiment Construction

[0016] The following detailed description is intended to explain the preferred embodiments shown in the accompanying drawings. It is to be understood that variations from the specific illustrated and represented embodiments will fall within the scope of the invention.

[0017] Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like numbered parts represent like parts throughout, FIGS. 1A and 1B show the basic components of a C-arm X-ray imaging system employing the method and apparatus of the present invention. In general, a C-arm X-ray imaging system, generally designated 10, includes the following components: a support base with a vertically extending column, a C-arm mounting device that provides movement of the C-arm in multiple directions, a C-arm 100, an X-ray Source 12, image receiver 14, image processing system, display and observation system, high voltage generator and control unit.

[0018] X-ray source 12 preferably includes an X-ray tube and a high voltage generator. Th...

Abstract

An anti-collision method and apparatus for use with a C-arm x-ray imaging machine (10) to prevent damage to the imaging apparatus and injury to patients and health care workers includes a load cell (110), a differential buffer and integrator (120), an analog to digital converter (130), and a microcontroller (140) controlling the motor drive (150). The present application also provides a method for controlling the apparatus via a microcontroller (140) and includes the steps of determining whether an up/down switch is actuated (161), reading and comparing a value with a tabulated value (162), halting the C-arm (164) if the difference between the tabulated value and the recorded value exceeds a threshold value (163) and reversing the apparatus (165).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to the field of X-ray imaging systems. In particular, the present invention relates to a method and apparatus for collision avoidance of a C-arm X-ray imaging machine, thereby preventing severe collisions between the patient, the operator and the device itself. Background technique [0002] It is often desirable to perform x-ray examinations of a patient from a number of different locations, preferably often without repositioning the patient for the examination. A movable C-arm X-ray diagnostic machine as shown in Fig. 1 has been developed to meet these needs and is known in the medical and surgical fields. A C-arm x-ray machine is particularly useful in that it is small and mobile enough to be used in a procedural or examination situation without requiring the physician to repeatedly move the patient or require the patient to reposition in order to obtain a proper image. [0003] The term "C-arm" refers to a C...
