Systems and methods for monitoring health care workers and patients

Systems and methods are provided for monitoring one or more patients to ensure compliance with required hygienic procedures and / or to ensure only authorized persons are allowed to attend to such patients. One system includes detectors that may be sequentially activated as a person approaches a patient. Activation of the detectors, in sequence, causes a signal to be transmitted by a controller. If the person is wearing a monitor and has complied with the required hygienic procedure, the monitor transmits a responsive signal to the controller that is encoded to indicate such compliance. If the person is either not wearing a monitor or the monitor does not transmit an appropriate responsive signal, the controller can provide a warning signal and cause a violation of protocol to be recorded. The system may include a portable sanitizer that is capable of functioning as a monitor. The systems and methods do not, however, require monitors worn by health care workers or other persons. Sensors may be associated with a hospital bed and / or a patient.

Medical devices with retractable needle

A hypodermic injection system with a retractable needle wherein the needle retracts within an interior cavity of a syringe plunger, such that the needle is confined within the plunger. A spring biases the needle rearwardly into the plunger, and a needle retainer releasably retains the needle against the bias of the spring. The plunger has a frangible end, which dissociates when the plunger engages the needle retainer, allowing the coiled spring to eject the needle into the interior cavity of the plunger. A body fluid sampling embodiment employs the same functional elements except the plunger is shorter and contains a linking that communicates with a vacuum container. The container allows fluid sampling and provides the structure to release the spring retracting the needle. The retractable needle embodiment is also employed with an insertion needle that guides a catheter tube below the skin of a patient and into the vein, and allows retraction of the insertion needle thereby avoiding accidental pricking of the health care worker by the insertion needle.

Inflatable incontinence bed pad

InactiveUS20070118993A1More air pressureLow air loss moisture wickingSofasFluid mattressesUrineAbsorbent Pads
An incontinence bed pad comprised of one or more inflatable pads and one or more absorbent pads for use under a patient on a bed. The inflatable incontinence bed pad serves to spread pressure over an increased area for the patient to prevent or treat bed wounds. The inflatable pad may channel or drain fluids such as urine into the absorbent pad below, keeping the surface and patient dry. Alternately, the absorbent pad may be placed above the inflatable pad to reduce cleaning work. The one or more air bladders are inflatable through one or more ports. The ports pass air from one or more manual or powered air pumps to the one or more air bladders. Making an incontinence pad of an inflatable nature offers advantages not available in the prior art. The inflation and deflation of distinct sealed chambers or zones within the inflatable pad may tilt a patient's hips to the right and to the left periodically. The pad may inflate in a static position. The pad may inflate and deflate zoned areas to alternate pressure areas of the patient. Inflating and deflating areas of the pad may push waste away from the person. The inflated pad may leak air to wick moisture and heat from a patient. Handles may be integrated to the inflatable incontinence bed pad for transferring the patient on and off the bed and to other places. Straps compatible with a patient lift system may be integrated. This could reduce work and injury to care providers, as well as reducing disruption to the patient. Side rails may be integrated for safety.

Method and apparatus for the storage of a tissue specimen

A device is provided for transporting a tissue specimen without the risk of exposing health-care workers to potentially hazardous tissue fluids. The device includes a container, a flexible portion, a first support member received in the container, a second support member extending from the fist support member, a first locating indicia on a first side of the first supporting member, and a second substantially radiopaque locating indicia on a second side of the first support member, and an indicating member movably mounted on the first side of the first support member. The first support member has a first locating indicia on a first surface and a second locating indicia on a second surface, which generates a radiographic image when exposed to x-rays. The first and second indicia are substantially in registration such that when a tissue specimen is positioned on the first locating indicia and is then exposed to x-rays, a radiographic image of the specimen superimposed on the image of the second locating indicia is produced. Since both locating indicia are in registration, any tissue abnormality within the specimen can be precisely located with respect to both indicia. The device further includes a second support member, limiting contact of the container walls with the tissue specimen, and biasing the flexible portion away from the first support surface containing the tissue specimen. The device further includes an at least partially radiopaque indicating member for indicating the position of the tissue specimen on the radiographic image. Pap smear collection device with ejection sleeve

Sample collection for the Pap smear sample is critical for accurate diagnosis. Improper sample collection, poor sampling, and / or cell preservation can render a Pap smear unsatisfactory for evaluation, requiring a repeat smear collection. If the Pap smear does not contain appropriate representative cells from the transformation zone and endocervical canal, the ability of the test to detect disease is very low. Likewise, if the preservation of the sample is compromised, the screener's ability to recognize abnormal cells is greatly diminished. It is generally understood that cervical samples should be harvested by a two-stage technique, which includes sampling of the endocervical canal with a cytobrush and obtaining a sample from the transformation zone with a spatula. The use of either the cytobrush or the spatula alone may be adequate but not as effective as the two-stage technique. Both the Cervex Brush and REG;(Unimar, Inc.) and the Accellon Combi & REG;(Medscand AB) are two collection devices which combine the action of the cytobrush and spatula, thus permitting broader sampling with a one stage technique. The standard method of transferring cervical cells from the collection device or complete transfer of the collection device into the liquid collection vial is often challenging. These challenges include but are not limited to: 1-spilling the sample, 2-dispersing the medium collection such that air born body secretions could contact unprotected health care workers, 3-missing the collection container and contaminating the sample. It is the goal of the current device embodiment to provide a simple and consistent method of transferring the entire collection specimen into the collection container to maximize cell collection while minimizing challenges of head disengagement. Such devices are not limited to the cervical cell cytology collection markets but extend to all cell collection methods were the entire sample is suspended in a liquid or similar medium. Such samples include oral cavity collections (throat swabs, vaginal cavity collections (STDs, pregnancy test), urethral cavity collections (male STDs) fornex collections (Alaph fetal protein), and rectal collections as well as open procedures requiring cell sampling.
