Abstract

The present invention provides an automatic charging system for selectively charging batteries in vehicles. The automatic charging system includes a charger capable of charging a first battery in a vehicle. A controller connected to the charger is used to determine whether the first battery needs to be charged. If charging is required, the controller causes the charger to automatically provide the first voltage signal to the first battery without intervention from the user. The invention also provides a method of charging a battery in a vehicle, said method being performed by the automatic electric field charging system of the invention.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a system and method for charging a battery in a vehicle. More particularly, the present invention relates to a system and method for charging a high voltage battery in a hybrid electric vehicle. Background technique [0002] Government regulations and environmental considerations have dictated the need for automakers to develop more efficient fuel powertrains. All-electric and hybrid-electric drivetrains are two examples of such drivetrains currently under development. Although the hope for all electric vehicles is that they offer the potential to be regenerated simply by plugging into an electrical outlet, and that reliance on fossil fuels can be completely eliminated, these vehicles are currently limited by current technology, even after years of research And can only have a limited distance range. Furthermore, when compared to conventional internal combustion vehicles, consumer acceptance of such vehicles is influ...
