AI Technical Summary

Problems solved by technology

Film grain constitutes a high-frequency quasi-random phenomenon that typically cannot be compressed using traditional spatial and temporal methods that exploit redundancy in video sequences
Attempts to process original film images using MPEG-2 or ITU-T / ISO H.264 compression techniques usually result in either unacceptably low compression, or complete loss of grain texture

Embodiment Construction

[0015] figure 1 A schematic block diagram of a first embodiment of a system 10 for performing film grain simulation according to current principles is depicted. The system 10 includes a film grain remover 22 for removing film grain from an input video stream 12 to produce a filtered video stream 24 received at a video encoder 13 . Film grain removal constitutes a specific case of noise filtering, where the noise signal is correlated with the image signal. Accordingly, film grain remover 22 may take the form of a conventional image filter, although such a filter will not necessarily provide optimal performance. The video encoder 13 encodes the filtered video stream 24 to produce an encoded video stream 14 for reception at a video decoder 15 which decodes the encoded stream to produce a decoded video stream 16 . Video encoder 13 and video decoder 15 utilize the same video encoding scheme known in the art. For example, the video coding scheme may include the ITU-TH.264 video c...

Abstract

To characterize film grain, a film grain characterizer (23) receives an input stream (12) in which film grain has been removed and a filtered stream (24). From these streams, the Film Grain Characterizer (23) outputs information containing the identity of the model used to simulate the grain, and at least one of a set of parameters including correlation parameters used by the identified model, intensity Independent parameters and intensity-dependent parameters. Encoders (26, 13) encode film grain information for subsequent transmission.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority under Section 35 of U.S.C. 119(e) to U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 60 / 470,712, filed May 15, 2003, the subject matter of which is hereby incorporated. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to a technique for simulating film grain. Background technique [0004] Motion picture film consists of silver halide crystals dispersed in latex, which are coated in thin layers on a base. Exposure and development of these crystals forms a photographic image composed of discrete, fine silver grains. In color negative, where the silver is chemically removed after development, tiny spots of stain exist where silver crystals form. These small spots of stain are often called "grain" in color film. The grains appeared randomly distributed on the resulting image due to the random composition of the silver crystals on the original latex. In uniformly exposed areas, some crysta...
