Embodiment Construction

[0096] First refer to figure 1 and 2 , which is substantially identical to the actuator described in our co-pending International Patent Application PCT / GB02 / 01111, comprising: an outer shell 1 which also acts as a reactive mass and contains an inner core 2 The inner core 2 is composed of a giant magnetostrictive material ("giantmagnetostrictive material, GMM") element, and the giant magnetostrictive material ("GMM") element is surrounded by an electromagnetic coil and located between a plurality of permanent magnets. This element is prestressed by a spring 3 and is coupled to a pusher 4 which in turn is connected to a base 5 which in use is pressed against the surface into which the sound waves will be transmitted. A piezoelectric sensing element 6 is incorporated into the actuator to sense acoustic signals within the surface to which the actuator is attached. exist figure 1 In the example shown, the sensing element 6 is provided on the outer surface of the base 5, while...

Abstract

An audio system comprises, according to one aspect of the invention, an audio frequency actuator coupled to a body so as to cause the body to radiate sound when an audio signal is supplied to the actuator by a controller, and an acoustic sensor coupled to said body or to an adjacent body so as to sense acoustic vibrations in said body, the sensor being connected to the controller, whereby the controller is arranged to change the audio signal supplied to the actuator according to the vibrations sensed by the sensor. Another aspect provides an audio system comprising an audio frequency actuator coupled to a body so as to cause the body to radiate sound when an audio signal is supplied to the actuator by a controller, and an acoustic sensor coupled to said body or to an adjacent body so as to sense acoustic vibrations in said body, the sensor being connected to the controller, whereby the controller is arranged to detect predetermined characteristics of the sensed acoustic vibrations and to output an alerting signal in response thereto.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to an audio system. In one aspect, the invention relates to the transformation of otherwise non-responsive bodies, such as rigid or flexible panels, by adding high-intensity, broadband acoustic actuators to create smart surfaces that transmit and / or receive Acoustic signals to provide discreet audio or noise shielding or to sense attacks for security purposes. When multiple such panels are activated, the audio system of the present invention can be described as providing a single smart surface with associated sound track properties or closed volumes. [0002] The volume to be affected can be a single or multiple arrangement of fixed or mobile smart surfaces. [0003] Another aspect of the present invention also involves controlling the noise level emanating from these smart surfaces or structural elements to avoid environmental noise pollution and create sound shielding areas (or volumes) or higher noise to the converted s...
