A device, such as a bra, having: a body portion such as a breast cup; and at least one elastomeric support portion with a
system for controlling energy associated with motion of at least one body part of a user. This
energy control system includes a strain-rate sensitive
polymer material, and may provide motion damping associated with the body part which dynamically varies with strain-rate. The elastomeric support may comprise a strap, such as a shoulder strap, or a trim at an edge of the device, such as a bra under-band. The device could be other apparel such as a different wearable item of clothing, a shoulder bag, carry case, baby carrier, medical application item, backpack or watch. Alternatively, the device may be a fall arrest device,
safety net, harness, reinforced strap, lanyard, climbing
rope or vehicle seatbelt. Also claimed are methods for manufacturing the apparel or device, in which the elastomeric support may comprise
textile into which strain-rate sensitive
polymer material fibres are woven, knitted, crocheted or braided, or onto which the strain-rate sensitive
polymer is dip-coated, heat-pressed, sprayed, knitted, laminated or printed.
