Embodiment Construction
[0012] When operating in accordance with a general embodiment of the present invention, the effluent from the first hydroprocessing step includes a gas phase and a liquid phase. The gas phase includes mainly C1-C4 hydrocarbons and hydrogen, with minor amounts of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide formed in the first hydrotreating step. The liquid phase includes C5 and higher hydrocarbons. In a separator located upstream of the second hydrotreating step, the bulk of the gas phase is separated from the effluent. The remaining mixed gas-liquid phase is subjected to a second hydrotreating step to remove colored components. The gas-to-liquid volume ratio in the mixed phase depends on the content of colored components in the liquid phase and the amount of hydrogen required to hydrogenate these components in the second hydrotreating step. Conventionally, the above volume ratios can be adjusted by controlling the pressure drop across the catalyst bed in the second hydrotreating step by me...
