Embodiment Construction

[0076] Figure 1 is a schematic view of a part of a radiation source 1 with a serrated raised edge 2 extending in opposite directions on the facing edge.

[0077] Figure 2 schematically shows a sealed radiation source 3 according to one embodiment of the invention. The radiation source consists of metal, such as titanium, and the housing 4 is sealed at both ends 5 . The inside and / or outside of the housing has threads 6 etched thereon. The housing comprises a silver rod 7 coated with a layer of silver iodide comprising125I. Silver rods 7 can be detected by X-ray imaging techniques.

[0078] Figure 3 shows a metal (eg titanium) tube 8 which has been pinched to form helical grooves 9 on its exterior and interior. Such tubes are suitable for use in sealed radioactive source products according to the invention.

[0079] FIG. 4 shows a section through the metal tube 8 of FIG. 3 during the pinching operation. The tube is crimped between the support tool 10 and the crimping tool ...

Abstract

Radioactive sources, preferably radioactive seeds, for use in brachytherapy comprises a radioisotope within a sealed biocompatible container, wherein at least one part of a surface of the container is roughened, shaped or otherwise treated so that it is no longer smooth. The surface treatment may enhance the ultrasound visibility of the source and / or reduce the tendency of the source to migrate once implanted in a patient's body. Preferred radioisotopes are palladium-103 or iodine-125.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to radiation therapy. More particularly, it relates to radiation sources used in brachytherapy, and in particular to radiation sources with improved visibility for ultrasound imaging. Background technique [0002] Brachytherapy is a term covering medical treatments that involve the placement of a radiation source close to diseased tissue, and may involve the temporary or permanent implantation or infusion of the radiation source into the patient. The radiation source is therefore located close to the part of the body being treated. This has the advantage that high doses of radiation can be delivered to the treatment site while relatively low doses of radiation surround or intervene in healthy tissue. [0003] The use of brachytherapy has been proposed in the treatment of a variety of diseases, including arthritis and cancers such as breast, brain, liver and ovarian cancers, especially prostate cancer in men (see for exam...
