Problems solved by technology

Such films require specific resin designs and are significantly more expensive than breathable films produced by activating non-elastic films with inorganic fillers
Furthermore, such a single piece elastic film does not provide breathability with the same level of moisture permeability

Embodiment Construction

[0015] Although additional layers may be added to the composites of the present invention, the basic structure of the composites may be referred to as an A-B structure, where "A" is the elastic nonwoven fabric layer and "B" is the breathable non-elastic film layer. Alternatively, the composite may have an A-B-A or B-A-B structure, or other multilayer composite structures, including structures with non-A or non-B layers (excluding the adhesive layer). It should be understood that an adhesive may be used to laminate A and B together. Likewise, multilayer composites having more than three layers are within the scope of the invention, including composites made from one or more layers other than A and B.

[0016] Can be produced by extrusion bonding a film to an elastic nonwoven, or by adhesive lamination to or between one or more elastic nonwovens Membrane-nonwoven fabric composites. Alternatively, the composite material can be produced by casting (direct or off-line), in partic...

Abstract

This invention concerns an elastic multilayer composite, comprising a breathable non-elastic film layer and an elastic nonwoven layer such as a spunbonded fabric. This invention also concerns a process for manufacturing an elastic multilayer composite, comprising: forming the composite using a breathable non-elastic film layer and an elastic nonwoven layer.

Description

[0001] This application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 60 / 598,319, filed August 3, 2004, and is incorporated herein by reference. Background technique [0002] Laminates of breathable films and nonwovens are generally used as moisture-permeable liquid barriers that provide good contact. Typical applications are diapers (backsheets, side pads and ear components), protective garments, medical gowns and medical drapes. Different technologies have been established to produce such laminates. For example, breathable films, which may be monolithic or microporous films, are laminated to standard non-elastic nonwovens using bonding techniques such as hot melt adhesive lamination and thermal bonding. Another example is a non-elastic nonwoven fabric extrusion coated with a single sheet of breathable polymer. Moisture is transported through such monolithic films by means of a solution / diffusion process, rather than through open voids, which results in a ...
