A transfer case assembly 10 is placed on an inspection station or positioner 12 after being fabricated on and by a conventional assembly line 14 . The transfer case assembly 10 includes a housing 20 and an input shaft 22 coupled to and driven by the output of an automatic or manual transmission (not shown) of a four wheel drive vehicle. The input shaft 22 may directly drive an output shaft 24, or the two shafts may be coupled by a range selection device such as a planetary gear train (not shown) to provide both a direct (high range) output and a reduction (low gear) output.
