Embodiment Construction

[0034] The present invention provides a polar modulation system in which the polar modulation is achieved by generating a multilevel pulse width modulated signal, and in which by comparing the RF oscillator output signal carrying the phase information of the baseband signal with the amplitude associated with the baseband signal Predistort the signal to generate a multilevel pulse width modulated signal.

[0035] According to one embodiment of the present invention, figure 1is a block diagram showing the units required in a system that realizes polar modulation by generating a multi-level pulse width modulated signal. A system for realizing polar modulation by generating a multilevel pulse width modulated signal (100) includes a baseband predistortion unit 115, an inverting linear amplifier 130 with unity gain, a first comparator 140, a second comparator 150, a combination and Amplification stage 160 , bandpass filter 170 and antenna 180 . The first comparator 140 has a posit...

Abstract

A system and a method for polar modulation achieved via generation of a multi-level pulse width modulated signal. The system in overview comprises a base-band pre-distortion element (115) producing a pre-distorted signal carrying the amplitude information of the base-band signal, two comparators (140,150) providing two inter-related pulse width modulated signals and a combination and amplification stage (160) that provides a third pulse width modulated radio frequency signal carrying the amplitude and the phase of the base-band signal. The first and second comparators compare a radio -frequenc signal carrying the phase information of the base-band signal with the pre-distorted signal and an inverted copy of the pre-distortion signal respectively.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a polar modulation system, in particular to a polar modulation system that realizes polar modulation by generating multipolar pulse width modulation signals. Background technique [0002] Polar modulation has proven to be an effective and efficient method for providing multi-mode and multi-band operation. In polar modulation, the amplitude and phase of the carrier are modulated independently. This approach allows the use of the same modulator structure for different wireless standards such as CDMA, TDMA, GSM or GPRS, with digital switching at the transmitter if required. [0003] Rather than using the traditional in-phase I and quadrature Q scalar components of the baseband signal to modulate the RF carrier, polar modulation explicitly modulates the amplitude of the RF carrier with the amplitude A of the complex baseband signal and can explicitly modulate the amplitude A of the complex baseband signal with Angle φ mod...
