Embodiment Construction

[0040] While the disclosure is detailed and precise to enable those skilled in the art to practice the disclosed technology, the physical embodiments disclosed herein are merely illustrative of aspects of the disclosure, which may be embodied in other specific structures. Having described a preferred embodiment, details may be changed without departing from the disclosure defined by the examples.

[0041] I. High Intensity Focused Ultrasound for Renal Neuromodulation

[0042] For catheter systems used to apply energy intravascularly to vascular tissue, the energy delivery element is typically placed as close as possible to the tissue to be treated in order to achieve a therapeutic effect. However, since the best energy density is closest to the tip of the catheter, the strongest tissue action decreases from the tip. For intravascular renal neuromodulation applications, this can result in higher energy delivery to the interior of the renal artery and less energy delivery to th...

Abstract

Catheter apparatuses, systems, and methods for achieving renal neuromodulation by intravascular access are disclosed herein. One aspect of the present application, for example, is directed to apparatuses, systems, and methods that incorporate a catheter treatment device that employs high intensity focused ultrasound. The high intensity focused ultrasound may be used for application of energy to modulate neural fibers that contribute to renal function, or of vascular structures that feed or perfuse the neural fibers. The ultrasound transducer for delivering the energy may be located remotely from the desired treatment area. In particular embodiments, an ultrasound transducer may apply energy at one or more focal zones or focal points that target renal nerves.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Application No. 61 / 258,824, filed November 6, 2009, which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] The present disclosure relates to high intensity ultrasound devices, systems and methods for intravascular neuromodulation, and more particularly to high intensity ultrasound devices for applying energy to renal arteries. Background technique [0004] Hypertension, heart failure, chronic kidney disease, insulin resistance, diabetes and metabolic syndrome represent significant and growing global health problems. Current treatments for the conditions include non-pharmaceutical, pharmacological and device-based approaches. Despite varying treatment options, rates of blood pressure control and therapeutic efforts to prevent these disease states and their sequelae remain unsatisfactory. Although the causes of these conditions are multiple...
