Embodiment Construction

[0054] refer to figure 1 , shows a detection system 1 for measuring the energy (power) of incident radiation in the form of one or more photons 2 in the terahertz region of the optical, infrared and / or electromagnetic spectrum.

[0055] The system 1 includes a bolometer 3 (which may be an element in an array) cooled to an ultralow temperature, preferably between 0.5 and 2K, using a refrigeration system 4, such as a closed loop helium system 4. between. The bolometer 3 may be provided with a cooling device 5, which may be integrated into the bolometer 3, or it may be supported on the same substrate formed as the bolometer.

[0056] The measurement of photon energy is carried out using circuit 6, which includes a current or voltage bias source 7, which may be a current bias for driving a constant current through the bolometer 3, and a voltage or current sensor 8. source, or may be a voltage bias source for applying a constant voltage bias across the bolometer 3, the current or...

Abstract

A bolometer is described. The bolometer comprises a superconductor-insulator-semiconductor-superconductor structure (91; Figure 2) or a superconductor-insulator-semiconductor-insulator-superconductor structure (92). The semiconductor comprises an electron gas (10) in a layer of silicon, germanium or silicon-germanium alloy (11) in which valley degeneracy is at least partially increased. The insulators or one or both of the insulators may comprise a layer (131, 132) of dielectric material. The insulators or one or both of the insulators may comprise a non-degenerately doped semiconductor layer.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a bolometer and to an arrangement comprising an array of bolometers. Background technique [0002] A bolometer can be used to detect and measure the energy (or power) of incident electromagnetic radiation. [0003] Superconductor-based bolometers can exhibit high sensitivity and fast response. [0004] One form of superconductor-based bolometer is a hot electron bolometer (HEB), which includes a superconductor and a pair of conventional metal contacts. One example of a thermionic bolometer is described in JP 200488852A. [0005] Another form of superconductor-based bolometer is the cold electron bolometer (CEB), which comprises a conventional metal-insulator-superconductor (NIS) tunnel junction, eg as described in US5634718A. The metal area acts as an absorber cooled using the tunnel junction. [0006] Yet another form of superconductor-based bolometer is the transition boundary sensor (TES), which is similar to a c...
