Embodiment Construction

[0084] The method will now be explained based on a specific example.

[0085] figure 1 shows how to implement the method. Implementation includes some conventional preparatory steps such as unwinding the wire from the I-beam 102 , cleaning the wire in an alkaline degreasing bath, followed by an acid wash 106 . Optionally, the wire may be pre-coated in bath 108 with a metallic glitter coating. These optional steps are known to those skilled in the art. The resulting filament 104 is used as an elongated metal-based filament as the starting product of the process. The steel wire is a 120 μm plain carbon steel wire (0.80% by weight carbon) with a tensile strength of about 3950 N / mm2 coated with brass. The wire was coated with a 700 nm layer of nickel prior to depositing the abrasive particles so as to have a compatible surface in the fixation bath.

[0086] The base filament 104 is introduced into a fixation bath 110 comprising:

Abstract

A method is described to produce a fixed abrasive saw wire (104) by electrolytic deposition of abrasive particles pre-coated with a first metal on an elongated substrate wire (104, 202). The method is specific in that in the initial fixation bath (110) of the abrasive particles activating metal ions are added differing from the first metal. The activating metal ions deposit together with first metal ions in a fixation layer on the metallic substrate wire (104, 202) and enhance the activity of abrasive particles that are only partly coated. Thereafter a bonding layer is deposited from a deposition bath (108) that is free of added metal bonding layers. The resulting wire (104) has more than 70% of all activating metal present close to the metallic substrate wire (104, 202) within a width of 30% of the total thickness of the fixation and bonding layer

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing a consolidated abrasive wire and a consolidated abrasive wire formed by the method. Bonded abrasive wires can be used for cutting hard and brittle materials such as sapphire, silicon, gallium arsenide, quartz, silicon carbide, natural or engineered stone or similar materials. Background technique [0002] In the field of semiconductor and solar wafer manufacturing, the development of multi-ring monofilament sawing machines has made possible the parallel cutting of multiple wafers (over a hundred) in a single cycle. In such sawing machines, a single length of wire is wound into several loops on a slotted capstan which keeps the loops at equal distances while the workpiece sinks into the wire web thus formed. The capstan drives the wire back and forth so that progressively new wire is fed at the entry ring of the web and used wire is withdrawn at the exit ring of the web. [0003] Today, basica...
