Abstract

A beamforming device for a phased array antenna, comprising: a laser source (2) arranged to provide a spectrum comprising a plurality of spaced wavelengths; and a distribution unit (4) configured to divide the plurality of spaced wavelengths One or more are distributed over a plurality of optical paths (6). A wavelength selective device (8) configured to receive a plurality of spaced wavelengths on each of the plurality of optical paths. One or more phase shift units (12), connected to the wavelength selective means, wherein the phase shift units are configured to introduce a phase shift to the received wavelengths. The wavelength selective device on each optical path is configured to selectively transmit wavelengths to the phase shift unit. The wavelength selective means are configured to receive the phase shifted wavelengths from the phase shift unit (12). The beamforming device further comprises a heterodyne device (16) configured to generate a signal for transmission by the elements of the phased array antenna, wherein the heterodyne device is configured to generate a plurality of selected spectra of wavelengths of the heterodyne laser source weight.
