The invention relates to an additive for processing polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and a preparation method thereof. The additive comprises at least one type of quaternary ammonium salt with hydroxyethyl. Aresearch finds that the quaternary ammonium salt with hydroxyethyl is used as the additive for processing the polyvinyl alcohol; the quaternary ammonium salt is an ion type compound and has relativelygood solubility with the PVA; the quaternary ammonium salt with hydroxyethyl can be used as a small molecule and acts between PVA macromolecules, and the Van der Waals acting force between the PVA macromolecules is reduced, so that the flowability of processing is improved and the melting point in a PVA processing process is reduced, and furthermore, the processing temperature can be reduced; theproblem that hydroxyl is likely to shrink in the processing process is avoided, so that the problem that a material obtained by processing the polyvinyl alcohol easily becomes yellow and the problemthat the small molecules are easy to dialyze are overcome; and meanwhile, the energy consumption of processing is also reduced.
