Embodiment

[0125] 1. Experimental method

[0126] Figure 7 is a block diagram of a system 10 that includes an energy application device 12 and a pulse generator 14 configured to apply high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). In one embodiment, system 10 includes a pulse generator including, for example, function generator 80 , power amplifier 82 and matching network 84 . In one embodiment used to generate the experimental results as provided herein, the pulse generator included a 1.1 MHz, High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) transducer (Sonic Concepts H106), matching network (Sonic Concepts), RF power amplifier ( ENI 350L) and function generator (Agilent 33120A). The HIFU transducer 12 is coupled to the animal subject through a 6 cm high plastic cone filled with degassed water. Figure 8 is possible with Figure 7 An embodiment of an energy application device used in conjunction with the system 10 comprising a HIFU transducer 74A and an imaging ultrasound transducer 74B arrange...

Abstract

The subject matter of the present invention generally relates to techniques for neuromodulation of a tissue that include applying energy (e.g., ultrasound energy) into the tissue to cause altered activity at a synapse between a neuron and a non-neuronal cell.

Description

[0001] Citations to related applications [0002] This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Application No. 62 / 415,212, filed October 31, 2016, the entire contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference for all purposes. [0003] Statement of Government Support [0004] This invention was made with Government support under Grant No. W911NF-09-1-0125 awarded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The government has certain rights in this invention. Background technique [0005] The subject matter disclosed herein relates to neuromodulation, and more specifically, to techniques for modulating physiological responses using energy applied from an energy source. [0006] Neuromodulation has been used to treat various clinical conditions. For example, electrical stimulation at various locations along the spinal cord has been used to treat chronic back pain. This treatment can be delivered by an implantable device that periodically generates e...
