[0005] Since blood pressure is initially maintained centrally, routine measurements (eg, arterial blood pressure and heart rate) fail to identify the onset and early stages of hypovolemia leading to hypovolemia

Embodiment Construction

[0044] It should be understood that the drawings are only schematic and not drawn to scale. It should also be understood that the same reference numerals are used throughout the drawings to refer to the same or like parts.

[0045]The present invention uses Doppler data from two different ultrasound probes placed at different locations on the subject's body, preferably superficial and secured using patches, to preferably be at these locations according to changes in the data. The ratio of measurements of arterial blood flow to detect episodes of hypovolemia or hypervolemia. Since both blood flow velocity and volumetric flow rate vary differently when centralization occurs depending on its proximity to the heart (see figure 1 ), so this difference can be used to warn that centralization is taking place, and thus the subject may be suffering from hypovolemia.

[0046] This can then lead to immediate disposition, eg, appropriate fluid management, which can be provided manually ...

Abstract

A system for monitoring blood distribution in a subject, comprises a processor(38) responsive to Doppler ultrasound data representing arterial blood flow in at least two different locations of the subject, such as the neck and the arm, to obtain velocity (C, B1, B2, B3) or volumetric flow rate at each location, to monitor changes in a predetermined function of the blood flows, and to provide an output indicative of the monitored changes which may result from blood volume centralization. According to the present invention, the onset of hypovolemia or hypervolemia can be indicated.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to systems and methods for monitoring blood distribution in a subject, detecting hypovolemia, and to methods of processing data to detect hypovolemia in patients. [0002] The invention also relates to a computer program product for implementing such a method. Background technique [0003] Hypovolemia, a state of reduced blood volume (particularly plasma), possibly caused by bleeding, is a common complication in intensive care. An important physiological response to this is hemodynamic centralization; that is, redistribution of blood volume from the extremities to the chest and head. The body does this through peripheral vasoconstriction, which restricts blood flow to the extremities, which initially allows the heart to maintain sufficient blood pressure for central, vital organs. When hypovolemia develops, the body cannot compensate and it will become unstable. Blood pressure will drop, leading to hypoperfusion of vita...
