The apparatus and method can be used to determine the presence of a target gas within a volume of unknown gas composition. The apparatus and method may further be used to determine the radiation absorption or emission intensity of a gas, eg relative to a calibration reference or threshold. The device and method can be used to determine the concentration of a gas. The gas can be any gas with a known absorption or emission spectrum. The gas may be an atmospheric trace gas. Example gases that can be determined to be present can include NO 2 , O 3 , CO, CO 2 and CH 4 , but the device is not limited to detecting only these gases, and these are mentioned as examples only.
