Problems solved by technology

Nikodym states that flux-cored electrodes for stainless steel welding include flux compositions consisting of non-metallic inorganic components in significantly higher percentages than in metal-cored electrodes for mild steel or low alloy welding (e.g. 5-10%), which results in slag covering the entire surface and firmly adhering to the weld, making it difficult to remove

Embodiment Construction

[0016] Slag formation is an essential part of the self-shielded FCAW-S (self-shielded flux-cored arc welding) process. Aluminum and magnesium are the primary deoxidizers and denitrifiers used in electrodes to deposit a non-porous weld metal. Almost all the magnesium and most of the aluminum present in the electrode ends up in the slag as oxides. However, there is a limit to the maximum amount of aluminum that can be contained in an electrode.

[0017] Aluminum in welding deposits has an adverse effect on the toughness of the weld metal, and this factor also limits the aluminum content in electrodes. Therefore, a certain amount of magnesium is used in combination with aluminum. The same weight of alumina (Al 2 o 3 ) and magnesium oxide (MgO), the separability of slag is not good.

[0018] According to this finding, if the weight of alumina in the slag is increased to twice or more than that of magnesia, the separability of the slag is significantly improved. This weight r...

Abstract

An electrode composition is disclosed, particularly useful for arc welding and utilized in a flux-cored arc electrode, which produces a slag that is readily removable. The electrode composition employs aluminum and magnesium in a atomic ratio of 1.5:1 or more, respectively. Also disclosed are methods for facilitating the removal of slag by use of particular electrode or welding compositions.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the field of arc welding, and more particularly, to easier removal of slag from arc welding. Background technique [0002] The most common method of joining metals using an arc is gas metal arc welding (GMAW) with a solid wire or gas metal arc welding with a metal cored wire (GMAW-C), flux cored gas welding (FCAW-G) , Self-shielded flux cored arc welding (FCAW-S), shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) and submerged arc welding (SAW). [0003] Flux-cored electrodes are increasingly used as a substitute for solid wire due to their increased productivity in the welded fabrication of structural components. Flux cored electrodes are composite electrodes consisting of a core (filler) material surrounded by a metal sheath. The core is mainly composed of iron powder, alloy components, and flux components to assist arc stability, welding wetting, appearance, etc., in order to obtain desired appearance and mechanical properties in ...
