Embodiment Construction

[0172] Figure 1A shows an example of a mass-produced inexpensive home consumer electronic device 50 capable of using information on a storage medium 100 such as a portable digitally encoded compact disc (eg, digital video disc or DVD). Consumer device 50 includes a dedicated optical disc player 52. In some embodiments, the optical disc player may also have the ability to write data to optical media (a writable DVD disc, or "DVD-RAM"). TV 54 connected. A remote control unit may be used to control the disc player 52 and / or television 54 .

[0173] In one embodiment, disc 100 may store a feature film or other video content. People who want to watch the content in the disc 100 can buy or rent the disc, insert the disc into the player 52, and use the remote controller 56 (and / or the controller 58 that may have on the player 52) to control the player through the home color TV. 54 Play back the content.

Abstract

A rights management device for storage media such as digital optical discs (DVDs, also known as digital versatile discs) that is available on a limited, mass-produced, inexpensive, low-power platform—such as a dedicated home disc player —Adequate copy protection and provide enhanced, more flexible security technologies and methods when the same media is used on platforms with more security capabilities. A control object (or set) defines multiple rights management rules, such as performance prices or redistribution rules. Low-functionality platforms can only use a subset of control rules, such as control over copying or tagging of played material. Platforms with more advanced functionality can use all (or a different subset) of the rules. Confidential security is provided by encrypting at least part of the information contained on the medium so that it can be decrypted based on control sets and / or other restrictions. A secure "software container" can be used to protectively encapsulate (eg, use encryption) various digital property content (eg, video, audio, games, etc.) and control object (eg, rule sets) information. Provides a standardized container format for general use across a variety of media and platforms. In addition, a dedicated container can be provided for DVD media and devices (eg recorders, players, etc.) that contain DVD program content (digital property) and DVD media specific rules. The techniques, systems and methods disclosed herein are compatible with other protection standards, such as the CGMA and Matsushita data protection standards adopted for DVDs. Cooperative rights management may also be provided, in which multiple networked rights management devices jointly control a rights management event on one or more such devices.
