It is subsequently cooled to a temperature between 2 and 13° C. by means of an ice bath. Under stirring, 2 mol of formaldehyde (using a 37% aqueous formaldehyde solution) were then added dropwise under vigorous stirring and cooling in an ice bath. After the dropwise addition of formaldehyde was complete, the temperature was slowly raised to 90° C. under a pressure of 400 mbar. Finally the vacuum was raised to 50mbar. The amount of distillate obtained corresponds to the theoretical amount of methanol and water used and produced.
