Problems solved by technology

Residual stresses within the film at such irregular surface locations may exceed the holding power of the adhesive, causing the film to wrinkle from the surface to which it is adhered
This results in an imperfect appearance

[0061] Example 1 was prepared using polyvinyl chloride (PVC) film approximately 25 cm x 10 cm and 0.004 inch (0.1 mm) thick; the film is available from Pentaplast of America, Inc. (Gordonsville, VA). The film had a glass transition midpoint temperature of 79°C as determined using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).

[0062] The glass transition temperature of the film samples was measured by weighing and loading the samples into TA Instruments aluminum standard DSC cuvettes. Samples were analyzed using TA InstrumentsQ1000 (#131, Cell RC-858) Differential Scanning Calorimetry (MDSC). The modulation method used to analyze the samples consisted of a linear heating rate of 5°C / min and a superimposed perturbation amplitude of ±0.796°C / 60 sec. The samples were subjected to hot-cold-hot temperature changes ranging from -100°C to about 175°C. The recorded glass transition temperature was evaluated using a step change in the reversing (R) heat flow (related to heat capacity...

[0078] Will be 0.0025 inches (63.45 microns) of Transparent film 99845 ( Film Clear 99845) laminated to an acrylic pressure sensitive laminating adhesive. This in turn was laminated to 3M as described in Example 2 TM Controltac TM Enhanced graphics film series 180-10 (3M TM Controltac TM Plus Graphic film Series 180-10). The composite was adhered to Regal Resin Bond Cloth Open Coat 960G as described in Example 1 (Regal Resin Bond Cloth Open Coat 960G). The gloss of the composites was measured before application, after application, and after aging at 150°F (65°C) for 24 hours. One example (Example 4) is the use of 3M TM Scotchcal TM Gloss coating 8519 (3M TM Scotchcal TM Luster Overlaminate 8519), the coating is plasticized PVC with a glass transition temperature of less than 30°C. Another example (Example 5) is 3M without coating TM Controltac TM Enhanced graphic film series 180-10 (3M TM Controltac TM Plus Graphic film Series 180-10). All samples wer...

Abstract

In a method of displaying a printed image on an irregular substrate, a polymer film having a glass transition temperature of at least 40° C. is provided. The polymer film has an adhesive layer disposed on a second side of the film. An image may be printed on a first side of the film with a solvent-based ink. The adhesive layer may be positioned against the irregular substrate and the polymer film may be heated. The heated polymer film is pressed against the irregular substrate. In another method, an adhesive layer may be disposed on a polymer film subsequent to printing an image on the polymer film.

Description

[0001] Cross references to related patent applications [0002] This patent application is a continuation-in-part of US Patent Application No. 11 / 427,398, filed June 29, 2006, now pending, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. Background technique [0003] The present invention generally relates to displaying graphics on irregular substrates. [0004] Adhesive-coated plastic films, especially vinyl films coated with pressure-sensitive or pressure-activated adhesives, are applied to a variety of surfaces for purposes such as advertising, decoration, protection, etc. kinds of uses. Most of these surfaces tend to be quite smooth. However, there are also many uneven or irregular surfaces that can include imperfections, seams, rivets, and other protrusions or depressions. [0005] When the film is applied and adhered to these irregular surfaces, the film can be pulled taut to bring the adhesive into contact with the irregular surfaces. Re...
