Embodiment 1

[0227] Example 1 - Use of sulfoperoxycarboxylic acid as coupling agent under high level germicidal application conditions

[0228] Peroxyoctanoic acid (POOA) stability experiments were performed under high level germicidal (HLD) conditions to evaluate the stability of compositions of the present invention comprising sulfonated peroleic acid products compared to known commercially available germicides.

[0229] Octave was tested against formulations A, B and C and their mixtures Products containing peroxyoctanoic acid are commercially available from Ecolab Inc. Formulation A is a mixture of: 2.5 wt% Dequest 2010 (commercially available from thermPhos), peracid grade; 61 wt% hydrogen peroxide (35%); 2.50 wt% sulfuric acid (98%); 6.0 wt% octanoic acid, 19 wt% Hostapur SAS (40%) (commercially available from Clariant); and 9.00 wt% SXS-40 (commercially available from Stepan Company). Formulation B is a mixture of about 20 wt% sulfonated peroleic acid product, about 10% peroctano...

Embodiment 2

[0242] Example 2 - Use of sulfoperoxycarboxylic acid as bleaching agent

[0243] The compounds of the invention were evaluated for use as bleaching agents. The stain removal power of the cleaning compositions is determined by washing with artificially soiled fabric samples. Contaminated samples are purchased from the manufacturer or from a vendor (eg, TestFabrics, Inc., West Pittston, Pa.). Soil types such as olive oil, sebum, cosmetics, wine represent natural soils found in laundry applications.

[0244] The soiled sample is washed with the cleaning composition in a device such as a Terg-o-tometer (United States Testing Co., Hoboken, N.J.). The Scrubber is a laboratory scrubbing unit consisting of multiple tanks located in a single temperature controlled water bath with an overhead stirrer under time and speed control. Wash test parameters included: wash temperature, wash duration, pH, mechanical agitation, cleaning composition dosage, water hardness, wash formulation and ...

Embodiment 3

[0263] Example 3 - Use of sulfoperoxycarboxylic acid as bleaching agent

[0264] Bleaching tests were performed to compare compositions comprising a sulfoperoxycarboxylic acid of the present invention, 11-sulfoundecaneperoxyacid (Compound D), with the following commercially available bleach / cleaning compositions: Tsunami Available from Ecolab Inc.; Oxonia Available from Ecolab Inc.; hydrogen peroxide (35%); and Available from Solvay. The chemicals were used as is, except that the pH was adjusted to pH 8 using sodium bicarbonate, and the pH was adjusted to pH 12 by adding sodium hydroxide in 5 grain hard water.

[0265] Fabric samples soiled with tea, blood or wine were used in this example. Contaminated samples were washed using the same experimental procedure described in Example 2. However, for this example, the soiled samples were washed at 120°F for 10 minutes. The pH of the wash solution was approximately 9 for all samples. Percent stain removal (SR) was determin...

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to novel sulfoperoxycarboxylic acid compounds, compositions and methods of making and using these compounds. Background technique [0002] Peroxycarboxylic acids are known for use as antimicrobial agents and bleaching agents. However, conventional peroxycarboxylic acids have the inherent disadvantage of limited storage stability and water solubility. In addition, most peroxycarboxylic acids have an unpleasant odor. Accordingly, there remains a need for storage stable, low or no odor, water-soluble peroxycarboxylic acid compounds and compositions that also have antimicrobial and bleaching properties. Contents of the invention Summary of the invention [0003] In some aspects, the present invention relates to novel sulfoperoxycarboxylic acids, and methods of making them. The compounds of the invention are storage stable, have low or no odor, and are water soluble. Additionally, the compounds of the present invention ...
