[0049] In the preparation of toothpaste or gel, it is usually necessary to add thickeners or binders to provide the desired consistency of the composition, to provide the desired active release characteristics during use, to provide shelf stability, and to provide the Composition stability, etc. Thickeners may include carboxyvinyl polymers, carrageenan, nonionic cellulose derivatives such as hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), and water-soluble salts of cellulose derivatives such as sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC ). Natural gums such as karaya, xanthan, acacia and tragacanth can also be used herein. Suitable thickener levels may range from 0.1 to 5%, and higher if desired.

[0050] Organic antimicrobial agents can also be used. Included among the above agents are water insoluble non-cationic antimicrobial agents such as halogenated diphenyl ethers, especially triclosan and essential oils such as thymol. Water-soluble antimicrobials including quaternary ammonium salts such...

Abstract

The present invention relates to a single phase oral care composition comprising: a. a stannous salt b. a potassium salt c. a chelant d. monofluorophosphate (MFP). The composition of the invention has been found to allow prolonged contact between stannous ion and nitrate ion in a single dentifrice without toxic effects or insoluble products. The invention further provides for the maintenance of an efficacious fluoride ion level.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to oral care compositions comprising tin(II) and potassium ions and monofluorophosphate (MFP). Background of the invention [0002] Dentin hypersensitivity is defined as acute short-term localized tooth pain caused by temperature, pressure, or chemical changes. Dentin exposure, usually due to gingival recession or loss of enamel, triggers hypersensitivity in many cases. Dentin tubules that are open to the surface are associated with hypersensitivity. Dentin tubules lead from the pulp to the cementum. When the superficial cementum of the root is eroded or exposed by periodontal disease, the tubules become exposed to the external environment and provide passage of fluid to the pulpal nerve. [0003] "Neural desensitizers" reduce nerve sensitivity in hypersensitive teeth by altering the chemical environment. Potassium salts are known to be effective in treating dentine hypersensitivity in this way. US3863006 discloses...
