Abstract

The invention relates to a method for operating an internal combustion engine (2) in a catalytic converter heating mode, wherein the internal combustion engine (2) can be operated in a normal mode, comprising the following steps: determining (S1) a first exhaust gas temperature indication, which indicates the exhaust gas temperature of the exhaust gas in a first catalytic converter (9), in particular in an oxidation catalytic converter,operating (S2) the internal combustion engine (2) in a first operating mode, in which exhaust gas having an elevated exhaust gas temperature compared to the normal mode is discharged from at least one cylinder (4) of the internal combustion engine (2) as long as the first exhaust gas temperature indication has not reached a specified first temperature threshold. Said method enables robust and simple diagnosis of the effectiveness of the catalytic converter heating mode according to the requirements of CARB Title 13 CCR Section 1968.2 Section (f)(12).
