A space gesture input method achieves measurement and resolving of gestures by means of a gyroscope-free inertial measurement unit and a special hardware layout scheme. The gestures are sent to a host through a wireless radio frequency unit after processing such as dimensionality reduction, characteristic extraction, mode recognition and encoding. Therefore, a handwritten character inputting function and a cursor positioning function are achieved. A corresponding hand-held device comprises a gesture collecting and resolving unit, a mode recognizing and encoding unit and a wireless transmission unit. The method and the device avoid use of a gyroscope. The defect that equipment is poor in large-acceleration impact resistance is overcome. Gesture detection is not influenced by postures of devices. Reasonable hardware layout of the inertial measurement unit guarantees low cost of handwriting resolving. A mode recognizing method based on stroke characteristics reduces storage space requirements and computation complexity. Relative algorithms are easy to achieve in a wireless SOC, and low cost and compatibility of the devices are guaranteed.
