[0060] I. Cardiac Physiology

[0061] The left ventricle LV of a normal heart H in contraction is at figure 1 show. The left ventricle LV is contracting and blood is flowing outward through the tricuspid (aortic) valve AV in the direction of the arrow. Since the mitral valve is configured as a "check valve" that prevents regurgitation when the pressure of the left ventricle is higher than that of the left atrium LA, it prevents the reverse flow or "backflow" of blood through the mitral valve MV. The mitral valve MV consists of a pair of leaflets with a free edge FE that evenly abuts for closure, as figure 1 shown. The opposite ends of the leaflets LF are attached to surrounding heart structures along an annular region called the annulus AN. The free edge FE of the leaflets LF is secured to the inferior part of the left ventricle LV by the chordae CT (hereafter referred to as tendons), which include multiple branching tendons anchored over the lower surface of each leafle...

Abstract

The invention provides devices, systems and methods for tissue approximation and repair at treatment sites. The devices, systems and methods of the invention will find use in a variety of therapeutic procedures, including endovascular, minimally-invasive, and open surgical procedures, and can be used in various anatomical regions, including the abdomen, thorax, cardiovascular system, heart, intestinal tract, stomach, urinary tract, bladder, lung, and other organs, vessels, and tissues. The invention is particularly useful in those procedures requiring minimally-invasive or endovascular access to remote tissue locations, where the instruments utilized must negotiate long, narrow, and tortuous pathways to the treatment site. In addition, many of the devices and systems of the invention are adapted to be reversible and removable from the patient at any point without interference with or trauma to internal tissues.

Description

technical field 1. Field of the invention [0001] The present invention generally relates to medical methods, devices and systems. In particular, the present invention relates to methods, devices and systems for endovascular, percutaneous or minimally invasive surgical treatment of body tissue, such as tissue approximation or valve repair. More specifically, the present invention relates to valvular repair of heart valves and venous valves. Background technique [0002] Mitral regurgitation is characterized by retrograde flow from the left ventricle of the heart through the incompetent mitral valve into the left atrium. During the normal cycle of heart contraction (systole), the mitral valve acts as a check valve to prevent oxygenated blood from flowing back into the left atrium. In this way, oxygenated blood is pumped through the aortic valve into the aorta. Valve regurgitation can significantly reduce the heart's pumping efficiency, putting patients at risk for severe,...
