[0015] refer to Figures 1 to 3 , the exemplary fuel cell stack assembly 10 includes a plurality of fuel cells 12 arranged in a stack. The pressure plates 14 a and 14 b sandwich the fuel cells 12 of the fuel cell stack assembly 10 . Each fuel cell 12 includes a membrane 16 positioned between a first catalyst coated substrate (CCS) 20a and a second CCS 20b. The CCS 20a is composed of a catalyst layer 21a and a gas diffusion layer 22a. The CCS 20b is composed of a catalyst layer 21b and a gas diffusion layer 22b.

[0016] The plate 24a abuts against the first gas diffusion layer 22a. Plate 24a includes channels (not shown) that convey fuel, such as hydrogen, from fuel supply 28 to first gas diffusion layer 22a. The fuel moves to the catalyst layer 21a through the first gas diffusion layer 22a. Another plate 24b abuts against the second gas diffusion layer 22b. The plate 24b includes channels (not shown) which convey an oxidant, such as oxygen, from the oxidant supply 32 to...

Abstract

An example fuel cell electrode forming method includes covering at least a portion of a copper monolayer with a liquid platinum and replacing the copper monolayer to form a platinum monolayer from the liquid platinum.

Description

Background technique [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to fuel cells, and more particularly to making platinum monolayer catalysts for fuel cells. [0002] Fuel cell stack assemblies are well known and typically include a plurality of individual fuel cells. Each individual fuel cell includes a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) positioned between two electrodes. The electrodes may be catalyst coated substrates (CCS). The substrate may be a gas diffusion layer comprising carbon fibers. The substrate disperses fuel cell fluids such as hydrogen and air. One of the CSSs works as an anode and the other CCS works as a cathode. Together, the PEM and electrodes make up a membrane electrode assembly (MEA). [0003] CCS may include a monolayer of platinum deposited on a core. The monolayer is one atom thick and utilizes platinum much more efficiently than commercial platinum nanocatalysts. Mass production of platinum monolayers is difficult. Contents of the invent...
