field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to pharmaceutical compositions for rectal administration comprising fidaxomicin, processes for preparing the pharmaceutical compositions for rectal administration and their use in the treatment of infections caused by Clostridium difficile use. Background of the invention [0002] Clostridium difficile is a Gram-positive toxigenic bacterium. The bacterium invades the intestines of patients whose normal gut flora has been suppressed by treatment with broad-spectrum antibiotics. The bacterial toxin causes varying degrees of damage to the epithelium of the large intestine (ie, the colon) and causes a range of diseases ranging from mild diarrhea to severe colitis. As antibiotic treatment induces the onset of C. difficile disease, the associated syndrome is known as antibiotic-associated diarrhea and colitis.
