Abstract

A disconnect structure for use with systems with battery packs and positive and negative bus rails includes an intermediate bank of low power (LP) relays, fuses, semiconductor switches, and sequencer circuits. The middle bank LP relay is disposed between the rails at the middle stack point of the battery pack and divides the voltage across the battery pack when commanded to open. A fuse is disposed between the middle bank of LP relays and the positive bus rail and opens in response to a dead short condition of the system. The semiconductor switches are arranged in parallel with the middle set of LP relays. The sequencer circuit selectively turns on the semiconductor switches and thereby coordinates the flow of current through the semiconductor switches and the intermediate bank of LP relays in response to a detected partial short circuit condition of the system. The system includes battery packs, bus rails and disconnect structures.
