Problems solved by technology

Typically, these metallic contaminant particles are relatively hard and cause wear in the system
Many times these systems operate in the cold outside and due to the increased pressure caused by the high viscosity of the cryogenic oil, putting in fine filter media to effectively trap these fine particles can negatively impact performance
As a result, the filters used tend to have higher absolute micron ratings, which allows larger contaminants to flow through the system and ultimately leads to lower component life

Embodiment Construction

[0020] Such as figure 1 with 2 Shown, generally at 10, is a preferred embodiment of the filter element of the present invention. Filter element 10 includes a cylindrical filter housing 12 to which a top plate 14 and a bottom plate 16 are secured. A non-ferrous bushing 18 is received within housing 12 with a tight fit. Insert 20 extends axially down housing 12 from top plate 14 , terminating above bottom plate 16 . Insert 20 includes a central return conduit 22 . Fluid is directed into the filter element 10 through ports 24 in the top plate 14 and returned to the exterior of the filter element 10 via the return conduit 22 . The insert 20 preferably has a plurality of radially extending plates 26 for introducing a flow pattern to the fluid inside the filter element 10 . Surrounding the exterior of the filter housing 12 is an annular ring of magnets 28 which will serve to attract ferrous contaminants present in the fluid where they will remain stationary against the liner 18...

Abstract

A filter for removing ferrous particles from a fluid. The filter has an outer filter housing and a non-ferrous liner inside the housing. A plurality of magnets are longitudinally extended at intervalsoutside the liner. An insert inside the liner imparting a directional flow to the fluid inside the filter whereby ferrous particles in the fluid are trapped by the magnets and held against the non-ferrous line.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to filter elements, and more particularly, to a novel, non-obvious filter element having a magnetic array that facilitates the removal of iron particles from a fluid stream. Background technique [0002] During the manufacture of hydraulic components such as gears, pumps, electrodes, valves and cylinders, ferrous metal particles are produced that contaminate the fluids used in the manufacturing process. These iron particles can shorten the life of the fluid system. Current ISO standards require particle removal down to the 4 micron level. Filters capable of removing particulate contamination down to 4 microns are expensive and typically must be combined in parallel or in series into a bank of filter elements to handle the volume of fluid flow that must be processed. When filtering oils used in manufacturing processes, it is known that magnetism can be used to remove ferrous contaminants, even sub-micron contaminants, fro...
