[0037] In one aspect, the invention provides a method of making an article comprising deforming an ingot of a nickel-based superalloy to form an intermediate article in which a substantially uniform dispersion of Laves phase precipitates is formed , wherein the Laves phase precipitates are present in the intermediate article at a concentration of at least about 0.05% by volume, and wherein the precipitates have an average diameter of less than 1 micron.

[0038] In one example, the Laves phase precipitate can be present in the intermediate article at a concentration of at least about 0.075% by volume. In another example, the Laves phase precipitate can be present in the intermediate article at a concentration of at least about 0.1% by volume.

[0039] In yet another example, forming a substantially uniform dispersion of Laves phase precipitates can include maintaining the temperature range to which the intermediate article is exposed, eg, between 700°C and 1000°C for at least ...

Abstract

The present invention provides a method of making an article comprising deforming an ingot of a nickel-based superalloy to form an intermediate article in which a substantially uniform dispersion of Laves phase precipitates is formed, wherein the Laves phase precipitates present at a concentration of at least about 0.05% by volume, and the precipitates have an average diameter of less than 1 micron. The present invention also provides a substantially uniformly dispersed nickel-based superalloy comprising Laves phase precipitates, wherein the intergranular and transgranular Laves phase precipitates are present at a concentration of at least about 0.1% by volume, and wherein the precipitates have a concentration of less than 1 micron average diameter. The precipitation of the Laves phase can control the microstructure during thermomechanical processing and produce superalloys with refined grain size.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to alloys useful in the manufacture of articles having improved service life in extreme temperature and physical stress applications, such as high efficiency gas turbine engines, and articles made by these methods. Background technique [0002] Consistent and extended performance of machined parts, including industrial gas turbine engines, is under increasing demand with improvements in efficient structures and components. For example, in many cases, the life cycle of shafts, disks and large wheels of gas turbine engines, among other components, may be limited by low cycle fatigue, particularly in terms of extended functionality and efficiency at high temperatures. For various reasons, nickel-based alloys and superalloys are generally attractive constituents for the manufacture of machine components where high performance is long-term required under extreme conditions such as high heat exposure and extreme temper...
