Embodiment 1
[0031] Mix 1 g of tall oil soap with dibromomethane in a ratio of 1:2. Phase separation was done by centrifugation and samples were taken from the lower (heavier) phase. Samples were evaporated to dryness and analyzed using a UPLC-ELSD system with a gradient of water, methanol and acetonitrile as solvents, using an Acquity BEH C18 2.1x50mm 1.7μm as a column ( figure 1 ). For the sample extracted with dibromomethane, the retention time of β-sitosterol was 2.05.

Description
technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the extraction of phytosterols from alkaline tall oil soap obtained by skimming from kraft process black liquor. In the method according to the present invention, dibromomethane, bromoform, tetrabromomethane or a combination thereof are used to extract phytosterols. Background technique [0002] Tall oil soap (TOS) is a by-product of the kraft pulping process. The soap is mainly composed of sodium salts of fatty acids, sodium salts of diterpene (abietic) acids, free fatty acids, free abietic acids and unsaponifiable neutral compounds such as fatty alcohols, sterols, sterol esters and waxes. Neat soaps typically have a water content of 25 to 45%, such as 30 to 35%. The pH of the soap is usually in the range of 12 to 13 due to the presence of entrained black liquor. In industrial practice, soaps are usually acidified with sulfuric acid to produce crude tall oil (CTO), which is a commodity. Sterols, especially phytoste...
