A vegetable oil fraction rich in non-tocolic, high-melting, unsaponifiable matter is prepared by the following steps: A vegetable oil having a slip melting point of not more thatn 30° C. and a content of unsaponifiable matter of at least 0.5% by weight is hydrogenated to fully saturate the fatty acids of the glycerides and to reach a slip melting point of at least 57° C. To the hydrogenated oil is added from 1 to 75% by weight of the unhydrogenated starting oil or another oil having a slip melting point of not more than 30° C. in order to act as a carrier and vehicle for the unsaponifiable matter. Then, a solvent is added to the oil mixture in a ratio between oil and solvent from 1:2 to 1:20, and the mixture is heated to transparency. The oil / -solvent-mixture is cooled in one or more steps to a final temperature in the range from −35 to +30° C., and the precipitated high-melting fraction(s) is (are) filtered off. The filtrate is desolventised, leaving a fraction rich in unsaponifiable matter. By this process very high concentrations of in particular the non-tocolic, higher melting unsaponifiables can be achieved, and the composition of the glyceridic part of the enriched fraction can betailored to specific applications. Also, a novel blood cholesterol-lowering effect of the unsaponifiable constituents from shea butter has been found.

The invention relates to a thin-film material for an optical fiber biosensor probe and a preparation method thereof. The material has catalytic characteristic and photosensitivity and is made from Fe3O4/SiO2 magnetic nanocomposite particles, bioactive enzyme, fluorescent material and sol-gel. The bioactive enzyme is fixed on the Fe3O4/SiO2 magnetic nanocomposite particles and the fixed bioactive enzyme and the fluorescent material are embedded in a sol-gel grid. The preparation method comprises the following steps: a Fe3O4/SiO2 magnetic nanocomposite particle carrier is synthesized; the carrier is activated by glutaraldehyde or by glutaraldehyde, bovine serum albumin and glutaraldehyde in sequence and then has a crosslinking reaction with the bioactive enzyme to fix the enzyme; the Fe3O4/SiO2 magnetic nanocomposite particles fixed with the bioactive enzyme are dripped on the surface of a treated glass substrate after being mixed with the sol-gel liquid blended with a Ru(bpy)3Cl2 fluorescent indicator; after cleaning, drying and aging, a sol-gel optical bio-composite sensing film embedding the bioactive enzyme and the fluorescent indicator is obtained. The optical fiber biosensor probe made from the thin-film material is especially applicable to the detection of blood sugar, blood cholesterol and the like.

The present invention provides an antiobesity composition comprising extract of Melissa as an active ingredient, use of Melissa extract, and a method for suppressing obesity using the composition. Also, the present invention provides an antiobesity composition comprising extract of Melissa and extract of Mori Folium as active ingredients, use of a mixture of Melissa extract and Mori Folium extract, and a method for suppressing obesity using the composition. Further, the present invention provides an antiobesity composition comprising extract of Melissa, extract of Artemisia and extract of Mori Folium as active ingredients, use of a mixture of Melissa extract, Artemisia extract and Mori Folium extract, and a method for suppressing obesity using the composition. When the present compositions are administrated into genetically obese mice or high fat diet-induced obese mice, the present compositions reduced body weight, body fat and gonadal fat, and reduce blood cholesterol level and obesity-related blood glucose level. Also, the present compositions suppress hypertrophy of adipocytes, and inhibit the accumulation of lipid in the liver by reducing the size and number of lipid vacuoles. Furthermore, in human clinial trial the present compositions show that body weight, PIBW, body fat, especially visceral fat, apolipoprotin B concentration, ratio of total cholesterol/HDL cholesterol and ratio of LDL cholesterol/HDL cholesterol are significantly decreased, and atherogenic index is improved and muscle mass is increased. Thus, the present compositions can be usefully applied as antiobesity composition for reduction of body weight and suppression of abdominal fat, particularly, visceral fat.
