A process for preparing renewable needle coke comprises: processing a feed comprising one or more renewable feedstocks in the presence of a cracking catalyst under fluid catalytic cracking conditions to obtain a heavy cycle oil; delayed coking of the heavy cycle oil under coking conditions to obtain an intermediate coke product; and calcining the intermediate coke product under calcination conditions to obtain the renewable needle coke. An aromatic polymer, such as polystyrene, may be co-fed with the heavy cycle oil to a delayed coker. In embodiments, the renewable sources used are algae, canola oil, soybean oil, used cooking oil, corn oil and beef tallow; the catalyst is a regenerated equilibrium catalyst (Ecat) obtained from an FCC unit, or a ZSM-5 catalyst.
