Problems solved by technology

[0009] Thus, while the development of artificial diets represents a promising alternative to current hatchery rearing techniques, little progress has been made in this area and there is still a need for an alternative strategy that is economically viable in a commercial setting

[0050] Vibrio SY9 (BCCM accession number MUCL 54982) was previously isolated from the gastrointestinal tract of South African abalone (Macey & Coyne, 2005). A genetically modified Vibrio SY9 strain, named K811 strain, was used in this study to allow quantification of this bacterium in artificial feed formulations. Vibrio K811 (V. midae K811) is resistant to streptomycin and contains the bioluminescent plasmid pKluxCat. This plasmid is a derivative of pAKlux2 containing the lux operator (luxCDABE) from Photorhabdus luminescens (Karsi and Lawrence 2007). pAKlux2 was modified with the addition of the Tn9 chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (cat) gene to enable antibiotic selection of transzygotes (unpublished data). Vibrio K811 in tryptone soybean broth (30g / L NaCl, 17g / L tryptone, 6g / L peptone, 2.5g / L glucose, 2.5g / L K 2 HPO 4 , pH 7.8) and incubated in an orbital shaker at 150 rpm and 25°C.

Abstract

The invention provides a method of aquaculture comprising supplying Vibrio midae SY9 as a food source to farmed aquatic animals. A feed composition comprising Vibrio midae SY9 is also provided. The aquatic animals are typically marine animals which feed on algae. These include abalone and echinoderms, such as sea urchins, sea cucumbers, starfish, brittle stars, sand dollars and crinoids. The Vibrio midae SY9 can be provided on or within an alginate film formed on a support.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to UK Patent Application 1821191.2 filed 24 December 2018. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to a probiotic feed composition for aquaculture, and an aquaculture method, which includes supplying the feed to aquaculture animals. Background technique [0004] Aquaculture of marine animals such as abalone and echinoderms is notoriously difficult. Abalone is a highly sought-after seafood commodity due to its high nutritional content and unique sensory properties of texture, flavor and appearance. As a result, abalone fetches high prices in international markets, especially in Asia, where it is a highly prized delicacy. Overfishing and poaching have reduced wild abalone populations to threatened levels, and farmed abalone currently supplies the majority of abalone meat consumed. [0005] Although adult abalone are cultured in outdoor waterways, the developmental stage ...
