Embodiment Construction

[0049] The drawings and the following description provide certain illustrative embodiments of the disclosure. It will thus be appreciated that those skilled in the art will be able to devise various arrangements which, although not explicitly described or shown herein, embody the principles of the disclosure and are included within the scope of the disclosure. Furthermore, any examples described herein are intended to aid in understanding the principles of the present disclosure and are to be construed as not being limited to such specifically set forth examples and conditions. As a result, the present disclosure is not limited to the specific embodiments or examples described below, but by the claims and their equivalents.

[0050] Composite parts, such as carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) parts, are laid up in multiple layers, which together are known as a preform. The individual fibers within each layer of the preform are aligned parallel to each other, but different ...

Abstract

The invention relates to a multi-track belt for use with a layer-by-layer forming machine. A method of making a preform for hardening into a composite part includes the steps of: distributing a first set of tracks at a first angle such that the first set of tracks are arranged side-by-side with respect to one another to form a first layer of a plurality of belts, where each track includes a belt of fiber reinforced material; applying a film in direct contact with the plurality of belts against shear forces applied to the plurality of belts; the multiple belts are conveyed to a core shaft; compacting the plurality of belts via a layer-by-layer PBP machine disposed at the mandrel; and removing the film from the plurality of belts.

Description

technical field [0001] This disclosure relates to the field of manufacturing, and in particular, to manufacturing using composite materials. Background technique [0002] Ply-by-ply (PBP) builders (also known as "single-ply builders") apply forces that compact unhardened layers (uncured or unconsolidated layers) of composite material onto a mandrel in order to create composite parts prefabs. Compaction ensures that the layers are physically integrated with the underlying preform and also ensures that the preform conforms to desired shape and size standards before it hardens (eg, cures or consolidates) into a composite part. [0003] The plies for use with the PBP forming machine may be cut from wide sheets of continuous fiber reinforcement. Cutting layers from a widesheet results in an undesirable amount of material being wasted in each widesheet. This problem is especially notable in the aerospace industry because thermoset materials are particularly expensive to purchas...
