A high-temp. gas nitrizing quenching ageing or isothermal quenching technology for iron or steel includes such steps as nitrizing in high-temp. medium containing nitrogen and no carbon to generate epsilon-Fe2-3N layer on the surface and high-N austenite on sub-surface, direct quenching in waster-or oil-base medium, and ageing at 180-300 deg.C or isothermal quenching at 180-300 deg.C. Its advantages are high hardness, high central plasticity and toughness, reduced distortion due to heat-treatment, and no generation of hydrocyanic acid.
