[0047]According to a first embodiment, a sample MEA (MEA #2) consisted of an anode comprising PtFe supported on carbon (20% by weight PtFe supported on Vulcan carbon) including a PrOx layer and an anode supported on carbon A second layer of PtRu (56% by weight PtRu supported on carbon (from Tanaka, Japan)) was directly coated on a polymer membrane electrolyte membrane (Nafion 122 DuPont). The two layers and membranes are in intimate ionomer contact and are electrochemically active. The anode catalyst loading consisted of 0.25 mg per square centimeter of PtRu, PtRu and PtFe were separated, and PtFe was 0.20 mg per square centimeter. The cathode consisted of a monolayer of Pt / Vulcan (from Tanaka, Japan).

A fuel cell includes an ion conducting membrane with electrodes. An electrode is arranged adjacent to the ion-conducting membrane and an electrically conductive element is arranged adjacent to the electrode. The fuel cell further includes a set of catalytic particles having the ability to catalyze gas phase oxidation reactions and electrochemical oxidation reactions. The catalytic particles are arranged at least on one of the electrode and the conductive element.
Description
Field of Invention [0001] The present invention relates to an electrochemical cell. More particularly, the present invention relates to preferential oxidation catalysts for such cells. Background of the Invention [0002] Fuel cells have been proposed as power sources for electric vehicles or other applications. One well-known fuel cell is the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), which includes a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) having a thin, solid polymer membrane electrolyte with the anode on one side and the cathode on the opposite side. . The MEA is sandwiched between a pair of conductive fluid distribution elements that act as current collectors for the anode and cathode. The fluid field is used to distribute the gaseous reactants on the anode and cathode surfaces, respectively, of the fuel cell. The conductive fluid distribution elements themselves may form part of the fluid field in the form of appropriate channels and through-holes to distribute the gase...
