Text messaging system and method

The text messaging system consists of mobile terminal (5) connected to mobile communication network (4), information terminal (3) connected to computer network (2), and server (1) connected to the mobile communication network and the computer network. The information terminal (3) has status detection means (22), (23), and (24), and detects an operational status including at least the connection status of the computer network and notifies the server (1) of it. The server (1) has status administration means (8) and (9) and decision means (10). The status administration means (8) and (9) retain the operational status of the information terminal (3) notified from status detection means (24) for each user. The decision means (10) determines a send mode according to the operational status of the information terminal such as whether to send a text message to an information terminal or to send a text message with a network application.

System and method for notification of an event

A method and a system for notifying a subscriber of the occurrence of an event, which may be a messaging event, in which a message is received by a messaging service associated with the particular subscriber; or a non-messaging event, such as the occurrence of a particular stock price. For example, an e-mail message is optionally received by the mailbox of the subscriber, which is detected by the notification request sender according to the present invention. The notification request sender then prepares a notification request according to a standard network protocol, such as HTTP for example, for transmission to a notification server for the subscriber. This server parses the notification request, and notifies the subscriber with a message according to a particular messaging service, such as an SMS (short message system) message sent to a cellular telephone of the subscriber, for example. Optionally and preferably, if a plurality of such messaging systems for notifying the subscriber is available, then the notification server determines the best messaging system or systems for notifying the subscriber, for example according to the preference of the subscriber.

Mobile originated interactive menus via short messaging services

A method and apparatus for providing 2-way interactive short message system menus to a mobile device using text-based short messaging rather than WAP techniques. This provides the ability to provide WAP like services at a fraction of the cost of CSD. Mobile Originated Interactive Menus are implemented as a feature of a Short Message Service Center (SMSC). Each option guides either to the next menu level, or to a final action to be executed according to the path followed by the subscriber. Importantly, the mobile originated interactive menus use SMS communications instead of circuit switched data (CSD) (e.g., instead of WAP communications), thus leaving traffic channels available for voice calls. Interactive SMS menus allow service providers to offer their subscribers personalized messaging menus with multiple options for quick and easy access to Web-based content. Users may define the content and frequency they want, whether it is a scheduled delivery or on-demand. The interactive SMS menu options offer customers a simple-to-use technique and apparatus for checking, e.g., stock quotes, local weather, and / or other Web-based news and information when they want it. The interactive nature of the service allows the wireless network to poll the user for their next response, with multiple menued options offered, making it highly intuitive. Replacement of messages in TDMA and GSM mobile devices allow for heavy usage without filling up the user's phone buffer, i.e., prior messages may be overwritten, to assure that only the latest information is all that is being displayed and read. The flexibility of Interactive SMS Menus can allow service providers to define their own base offering of menus, depending upon their targeted customer segments.

System and method of sending an arrival time estimate

Aspects provide for a navigation function implemented on a device that has a communication capability (e.g., a mobile phone) in which the navigation function automatically sends an Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) to a contact associated with a destination selected for navigation purposes. For example, when a user activates a navigation function on his mobile phone, and selects a destination for which a route will be generated from his current location to the destination, a contact phone number associated with that destination will be sent a Short Message System (SMS) message with the calculated ETA. Provisions can be made for automatic updates as the route is traveled. Other information pertaining to the reasons for the ETA can be selected or automatically generated by the navigation function.

Method and system for incoming call notification

A mobile station that is fully engaged such that it cannot be connected to an incoming call without being disconnected from an existing call receives an incoming call notification. The incoming call notification may, for example, take the form of a short message system (SMS) message or a packet protocol message, such as a session initiation protocol (SIP) message. The incoming call notification may identify the calling party and may explain how to take the incoming call. If the user accepts the incoming call, the mobile station is disconnected from existing calls and connected to the incoming call.

Wireless network location-based reference information

The present invention provides a ‘411xx’ value added service to wireless users. The disclosed ‘411xx’ service allows a mobile user who may be unfamiliar with their current geographic location to nevertheless obtain quick, accurate, and current information relating to the geographic area, e.g., different services in their current location, stores, libraries, gas stations, etc., via a mobile terminated (MT) short message system (SMS) message. In addition to the traditional ‘4-1-1’ dialed digits, a mobile user would also dial a number (or numbers) representing a feature code for a particular service, e.g., nearby ATMs, or traffic information. Upon receiving a 411xx call, the MSC generates an ORREQ / TCAP trigger based on a translation of the requested service represented by the extra ‘xx’ digits. The 411xx call is terminated on the MSC after an audible whisper notice plays to the caller, e.g., “thank you for calling, your requested information will be sent momentarily”.

Distributed immersive entertainment system

A multi-camera high-definition or standard-definition switched video signal is distributed from the Point of Capture (POC) using industry standard technology for broadband distribution such as fiber optic or satellite, to a Point Of Display (POD) where multiple video projectors or displays integrated with a digital light show and high-end audio are utilized to provide a totally immersive entertainment environment. That environment is controlled using a graphically based tool called the LightPiano™, and is then extended through the festival atmosphere in the Club Annex, where licensed merchandise, auctions, and swap meets are located. Online Instant Messaging, Short Message System (SMS) text messaging, Chat, and Fan Clubs generate additional content, which is sent back to the POD. There is extensive use of the Worldwide Web for both local and remote access to the chat, fan clubs, SMS and instant messaging systems, as well as for online access for customers to view scheduling, and purchase ticketing, webcasts and archive access. The Web is also used by the venue owner to manage the entire system for booking, data mining, scheduling, ticketing, webcasting, and facilities management. The Web interface combined with the power of the LightPiano makes this complex interrelated system relatively easy and intuitive to operate. It significantly lowers the cost of operation and makes the system scalable to a large network of POCs and PODs. It allows one POC to feed many PODs, enabling a truly global distributed, immersive entertainment environment.
