Problems solved by technology
This hydrophilicity can cause fiberglass insulation to more readily absorb liquid water, potentially compromising product integrity
Furthermore, it has also been found that the thermosetting acrylic resins currently used as fiberglass binders do not react effectively with the silane coupling agents traditionally used in the industry
Addition of silicone as a hydrophobic agent can cause problems when using incineration based abatement devices

Abstract
Provided is a fiberglass binder composition which comprises a polycarboxy polymer, a polyol and a fluorinated polymer. The binder also preferably includes a catalyst which is an alkali metal salt of a phosphorus-containing organic acid. The resultant binder provides minimal processing difficulties and a fiberglass product which exhibits minimal water absorption.
Description
technical field [0001] This invention relates to polycarboxy polymer binding resins having improved water repellency properties. More particularly, the present invention relates to thermosetting acrylic-based adhesive resins cured by crosslinking with multifunctional hydroxyl-active curing agents, the adhesives comprising such resins exhibiting minimal water absorption. This binder can be used to replace formaldehyde-based binders in nonwoven fiberglass products. Background technique [0002] Fiberglass adhesives have a wide variety of uses, including rigid applications, where the adhesive is applied to woven or nonwoven fiberglass agent applied to a sheet or fluffy fiber product, then dried and optionally B-staged to form an intermediate, but still curable product; and fully cured systems, such as architectural insulation. [0003] Fiberglass insulation products typically comprise a mat of glass fibers bonded together with a cured thermoset polymeric material. A stream ...
