[0022] experiment procedure

[0023] This study used a group of 4 male calves, approximately 3 to 4 months old at the time of infection with F. hepatica. Eggs in feces were counted using a separate device to ensure that animals were free of parasites prior to infection with F. hepatica metacercariae. Animals were domesticated for 19 days before being infected with liver flukes.

[0024] Before treatment (79 days before starting treatment), all calves were infected orally with 500 F. The larvae of T. nematodes and 10000 larvae of Cooperia sylvestris were infected by oral cavity. Calves were weighed 3 days prior to application of the spray formulation of the present invention to facilitate calculation of the dose required for each animal. The calves were slaughtered on the 18th day after treatment, and the liver, abomasum, and small intestine were taken out and processed for counting the number of internal parasites.

Abstract

A topical formulation comprising as active ingredients, at least one effective agent derived from Streptomyces avermitilis, i.e. a macrocylic lactone e.g. an avermectin or chemically modified or synthetic derivative thereof, e.g. ivermectin, together with another anthelmintic of the sulphonamide type, e.g. clorsulon, in a carrier that facilitates topical administration and delivery of the active ingredients transdermal Iy, e.g. a carrier that is useful for this purpose comprises alcoholic solvents, such as ethanol, and isopropanol, with optional excipients and formulation aids, which may comprise a polymeric species such as PVP or a poloxamer.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a composition effective against Fasciola hepatica, Ostertagia ostertagi, Cooperia oncophora infections in susceptible ruminants, especially cattle. Background technique [0002] Infection with Fasciola hepatica, Osteria austeni, and Cooperia syringae in livestock is an unresolved problem, especially in spring grazing cattle that are susceptible to infection on contaminated pastures. Injections containing ivermectin and Clorsulon are currently known methods of treatment for beef cattle and non-lactating cattle. [0003] Closulone, a compound belonging to the benzenesulfonamide family, is recommended for the control of adult liver flukes in cattle as an oral suspension or as a subcutaneous injection. The oral dose is 7 mg / kg body weight (bw), and the subcutaneous injection is 2 mg / kg body weight. Currently, topical agents have not been developed, probably because closulone does not penetrate the skin well. [0004] An ...
